Interview with Tony Burrus – CEO, MajorGig App [2023]

I’ve been working in the technology industry since 1998, carrying many titles, most recently as CTO for a California school district. Like everyone else, my family has struggled with the isolation Covid-19 has created for the world.

Great question, Pixelated Bits started just for technology consulting. Still, as the years have gone by, I’ve always wanted to work and be in the music industry, but I’m missing the one crucial thing you need to make that happen, meaning I can’t sing or play any instruments. 

Technology has helped me identify intersections to support artists who can sing and play instruments.

MajorGig is simple. I wanted to create a tool that would help performers earn money for their work.  Interacting with new artists and watching them grow and make money is my favorite.

We’re still new, and most queries have been for new features.  We’ll continue to listen to our users and develop new features but only if they are valuable for venues and performers.

Communication is key to overcoming or preventing challenges.

Live shows have taken on a new form since the pandemic, and paying attention to the details of how shows are booked and attended is key to survival in this industry.   

Work-life balance is an essential part of life, and it is necessary not to feel overwhelmed.  I enjoy bike rides when the weather is nice and cruising up the coast in my Vanderhall Carmel when I need to zone out and clear my head.

My thoughts for any entrepreneur are to keep going even when you don’t feel like it.  Often, I’ve wanted to quit and thought that I was wasting my time, and other times it feels like everything is happening how it’s supposed to. My advice is if it makes you feel good to create, then keep creating and only do it for those reasons. 

If you’re doing it to chase the money, it will never work.  Lastly, entrepreneurship is an extremely lonely road, so don’t buy into the illusion of it being glamorous.
