You could see when your friends were online, exchange messages, and have conversations via text, voice, or video.

The rise of IM took online communication to a new level, foreshadowing the social media revolution. It allowed people to maintain connections and have instant conversations with those in their social circles. No longer limited by geography, IM paved the way for the global real-time communication we enjoy today.

Following IM’s immense popularity, the rise of social media brought even more options for online communication. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram allow us to share updates, photos, videos, and conversations across vast networks of friends and followers.

    The influx of online communication options has also impacted the workplace. To enable efficient collaboration in remote/hybrid work environments, team messaging apps like Slack and Microsoft Teams have become essential.

    These platforms allow coworkers to chat in different channels, make audio/video calls, share files, assign tasks, get updates, and collaborate on documents. They’ve become vital tools for teams that need to communicate frequently and work together effectively.

    This represents a significant evolution from old-school office communication via email, phone calls, and in-person meetings. It empowers hybrid and distributed teams to stay aligned and work productively from anywhere.


    Changing Communication Norms and Etiquette

    The rapid evolution of online communication has necessitated new etiquette norms and best practices. For example, conveying tone properly via text, responding promptly to messages, using proper grammar/spelling, and not oversharing online have all become vital communication skills.

    We’re also still figuring out when various platforms are appropriate. For instance, messaging a colleague on Slack versus texting their cell phone can require discretion. New norms are also forming around emojis, memes, gifs, and other visual language.

    Online communication comes with both opportunities and risks. But by learning and adapting communication etiquette as technology progresses, we can maximize its connective power while minimizing potential downsides.

    Rather than replace in-person interaction, our ever-expanding online communication tools are now complementing and enhancing it.
