Besides in-app purchase features, the app’s source code is completely monetizable, too. A company can choose to buy an exclusive license. DIDIER VALENTIN hereby grants to LICENSEE a transferable, exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free, paid-up license : 

(i) to reproduce and use the Application and Source Code everywhere ; 

(ii) to make backup copies (either in hardcopy or electronic form) of the Source Code and the Application ; 

(iii) to store the Application and the Source Code in a source code repository ; 

(iv) to create modifications and other derivative works of the Application and the Source Code ; 

(v) to compile the Source Code, including any modifications and derivative works ; 

(vi) to reproduce an unlimited number of the Application and the Source Code for physical or programmatically incorporation into other projects (Target Application) ; 

(vii) and to market, sell and distribute the Source Code and the Application or any derivative works. 

The license agreement comes with a documentation of 311 pages.

Ara Spends is a budgeting and expense tracking application (“money dairy” or “spending diary”). It helps you avoid overspending by answering important everyday questions:

    How To Use Ara Spends

    Ara Spends doesn’t require any special permission to run (not even an internet connection). The user manually adds expenses as they come in, then the app displays the major trends for the month on the Summary page; and those of the quarter, on the History page. 

    To enter a transaction, simply choose a date, a category, a description (optional), the type of transaction (expense or bill), and the amount. If this transaction is of the bill type, you have the choice of transforming it into a task to do, and thus obtaining an automatic notification as a reminder. This transaction will also be displayed on the Today page. This page behaves like a task list. And when the expense has been made, with a single tap, it can be transformed into an expense. 

    How to use Ara Spends

    When registering a transaction, you have the option to specify its payment method (cash or credit). The Payments page displays the proportion of each mode of payment in graphs, so the user can better plan and control his spending on credit. 

    After entering a transaction, the user has the ability to add features to it, such as a manual notification; save it as a recurring expense, or even save it as a favorite, in order to speed up the entry of future similar transactions. Adding functionality to transactions happens on the Add-ons page. 

    The list of saved recurring transactions is there to be automatically copied, then transformed into bills for the month chosen by the user. This is the recommended methodology for making a monthly budget because it saves time. 

    For people who prefer to budget weekly, or by any other interval, the search by categories feature allows them to track their expenses for the period of their choice. If the user chooses to put his income into the app, then he’ll get to know how much money was saved for a given period.

    Finally, the multi-currency feature is also available and will be useful to travelers.

      What makes Ara Spends Unique?

      Ara Spends uses the conventions of to-do lists apps for expense tracking and budgeting, instead of presenting complicated features of financial management apps. Adopting the conventions and interactions of a to-do list, makes Ara Spends friendlier and easier to use for beginners. 

      Also, since all transaction entries are manual, the users can take the time to think about why they made the expense, and will therefore have the opportunity to ask themselves if it was worth it. This is not easy to do if the app would repatriate transactions automatically from the users’ financial institutions. Features are also available to speed up data entry. 

      Ara Spends Uniqueness

      The competition addresses the problem of budgeting and tracking expenses with conventions drawn from the world of finance, because it is financial institutions that offer these apps, most often. Ara Spends approaches it as a to-do list. It behaves like a productivity app, not a financial one. This is why Ara Spends is placed in the Productivity section of the Google Play Store. 

      Ara Spends can consider all online banking apps to be in competition, as they offer rudimentary expense tracking features, as well as apps like Mint, You Need a Budget (YNAB), Spendee, or GoodBudget. 

      However, these solutions offer many features that are there, not to better help the user, but to collect as much data as possible from him, in order to show him targeted advertising or to sell him new financial products.

      It was when I saw my wife (Ara) using paper and pencil to control her expenses, that I decided to start creating this application. I wanted something quick, easy to pick up, and very inexpensive for managing our finances.

      The application was developed with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The compilation was made with Apache Cordova. 

      The WebView module of the smartphone renders the interface and stores data (thanks to IndexedDB and localStorage). So the app requires no internet connection and no remote server. All data is stored on the user’s smartphone.
